Messerschmitt Bf 109E Werknr 1289 made a forced landing near Rye, Sussex, in November 1940, and was then taken to South Africa for a war bonds tour. It was repainted in the 1980s, but today is on display in much the same manner as seen here in the late 1940s.

Of the machines scrapped at the War Museum, the loss of the Junkers Ju 52 is now felt the least, with nearly 50 of the type (including licence-built versions) still surviving worldwide.

Six ex-Luftwaffe machines found their way to Johannesburg, but the two largest aeroplanes, a Junkers Ju 88 and a Junkers Ju 52, were scrapped owing to a shortage of space. The fighters fared better; in addition to the two Messerschmitt Bf 109s that survived, Messerschmitt Me 262B-1a Werknr 110305 and Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-6 Werknr 550214 still exist, and are on display to this day.

The South African Air Force received a small number of Hawker Fury IIs, and one of these, serial 211, was the only example of Sydney Camm's classic biplane ever to be preserved by a museum. Sadly, it was not to last long, and 211 went to a scrapyard in 1947, where major parts survived until the mid-1990s. Those parts were saved by a British collector, and are now stored in the South of England.

Four Westland Wapiti IIIs were exported to South Africa in October 1929, and another 27 were built under licence in the South African Air Force workshops at Pretoria. One of the British-built aeroplanes, "625", survived to be included in the museum, but was scrapped in 1947. Only one Wapiti survives today: "K813" at the Indian Air Force Museum at Palam, New Delhi.

The last of 57 Avro Tutors supplied to the South African Air Force survived with the War Museum collection for a while, and is seen here sitting between a German half-track and a derelict searchlight truck. Despite the ease with which it could have been stored for future exhibition, the Tutor was scrapped.
