    Bristol Beaufighter RD710, one of three based at Shallufa with the Target Towing Unit, was later transferred to the TTU at Abu Sueir. According to one source it was struck off charge in June 1944 - so, all things considered, it looks surprisingly healthy in this 1952 photograph.

    Well-worn Beaufighter RD747 later moved from Shallufa to No 109 MU and was written off at Fayid when the undercarriage collapsed on landing in October 1954.

    Refuelling 100 Squadron Lincoln SX944, one of a batch built by Armstrong Whitworth at Coventry between May 1947 and August 1949. This was the period when Bomber Command applied enormous fuselage serials to its aircraft.

    Detachments of Bomber Command aircraft visited Shallufa on Sunray training flights, usually staying about a month. Here, five Lincolns of 100 Squadron from Waddington rest on the sun-baked airfield, seen from the control tower behind the perimeter fence.

  • Recharging a Lincoln’s oxygen supply. All tractors were Crossley 4x4s with open cabs, no doubt appreciated in the hot and dry atmosphere of the Middle East. Lincolns were towed via a cable attached to the main undercarriage legs, and were manually steered by a towbar attached to the tailwheel.
