A mystery MiG-15 was recently spotted at the US Navy Air Show held at Point Mugu in California on March 31, 2001. The two-seat trainer exhibited nose art in tribute to the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin, and it is rumoured that a former Soviet cosmonaut now resident in the USA is organising a tribute to Gagarin later this year, which will involve the painting of a MiG-21 in another tribute scheme. If anyone has any more news on this, Aeroplane would like to hear about it.

The Imperial War Museum's French-built Junkers Ju 52/3m was rolled out at Duxford in early April 2001, on completion of its three-year rebuild supervised by the museum's assistant conservation manager Geoff Ochs. It will be on display outside for Duxford's first air display of the season on May 6, and will then go into Hangar 1.

On March 31, 2001 Weeks flew his P-51C down to Chino, where he spent a couple of days obtaining a type rating on another North American product, his B-25 Mitchell Apache Princess, before heading off to Lakeland, Florida.

LONE STAR Flight Museum Douglas A-24 Dauntless N93RW was damaged in a forced landing following engine failure on a photo sortie from Angleton, Texas, on March 31, 2001. A fuel line reportedly broke, and pilot Ralph Royce had to put the rare dive-bomber down in a field north of the airport. Royce suffered a slight head injury, but his cameraman was uninjured.

STITS PLAYBOY G-BVVR was undergoing test flights at Swanton Morley during February 2001 following rebuild to flying condition by Roger Burrows at the Norfolk airfield. The Playboy was designed in the early 1950s as an air racer and aerobatic sport aircraft, and G-BVVR was built, as N461S, in 1962 in North Carolina. It is one of only two on the British register, and will soon be ferried to Enstone in Oxfordshire by its owner, lan James.

A NEWLY-ACQUIRED full set of Browning machine-guns was trial-fitted into the nose of D.H. Mosquito FB.VI TA122 at the de Havilland Aircraft Heritage Centre at London Colney in late March 2001. TA122 is the only example of the type in Britain with the standard day fighter nose, seen here being worked on by Russell Clancy (in fuselage) and Bob Glasby.
