A recent arrival at North Weald Aerodrome is this ex-Russian Air Force Aero L-39C Albatross, c/n 433114, coded “84”. It was imported by the Jet Centre (formerly known as McCarthy Aviation) and is being restored for a British customer.

CANADA’S Alberta Aviation Museum, based at Edmonton Municipal Airport, recently finished the long-term restoration of its McDonnell CF-101 Voodoo, 101060. The aircraft has been spectacularly mounted on a pole at the entrance of the airport.

The Mi-17’s airshow party piece was to demonstrate its firefighting accuracy at high-rise targets; in this case the “volunteer” at the top of an 80ft crane makes a quick getaway after being hit by the high-pressure water jet. He must have been the coolest guy on Langkawi for this short time, while the crowd cooked under 32°C+ and 98 per cent humidity.

Partly stripped at St Athan for winter overhaul, the BBMF’s Lancaster PA474 will emerge for the year 2000 show season in a new colour scheme. The Lancaster’s engines are being stripped down at Coningsby, and an underfuselage H2S radome is being fitted. The Lancaster will wear the markings of 61 Squadron’s Mickey the Moocher.

THE COMMONWEALTH Air Training Plan Museum at Brandon, Manitoba, has loaned one of its Bristol Bolingbroke IVTs to its local Comfort Inn Hotel, where it is acting as an effective publicity tool for the museum's activities. It wears the serial number of a training machine, 9944, which crashed close to the site of the hotel in July 1943, killing the crew.

VOLUNTEERS FROM the British Aerospace North West Heritage Group have restored Lightning F.6 XS928 to pristine condition for display beside the flight test buildings at BAe Warton in Lancashire. It was tested there in early 1967, and former Lightning test pilot Johnny Squier unveiled it in front of NWHG members.

AT BREIGHTON, the only Benes-Mraz M.1C Sokol to be found on the British register, G-AIXN, is having the final details applied to its rebuild, which was begun six years ago after the discovery of failure in some of the airframe’s wooden glue joints. It was to have flown in 1999, but now looks set to fly sometime this year.

Dornier-built Bucker Jungmeister G-AXMT recently emerged from a major overhaul with The Real Aeroplane Co at Breighton in its original Swiss Air Force markings as U-99. Three British-based Jungmeisters are in Swiss marks, the others being G-BUCK/U-80 and G-BVGP/U-95.

One of 12 Boeing Stearmans now flying in France, PT-17 F-AZJR is painted to represent a US Navy N2S-3. Restored by Jean-Pierre Toublanc for the Salis Collection at La Ferte-Alais, it first took to the air again during summer 1999. The Stearman wears the eyecatching markings of the US Navy’s Training Command.

The latest exhibit at the Spanish Air Force Museum at Cuatro Vientos is Piper PA-30 Twin Comanche E31-2, which had been used since 1977 as a target-tug for Spanish Navy AV-8A Matadors (Harriers). The second of two Twin Comanches delivered to the Navy in 1964, E31-2 initially served on general liaison duties. Retired in mid-1999 from service with the 4th Escuadrilla at Rota, Cadiz, it went on display at the museum in September 1999.
