    The Whitley IV depicted here, K9018, served with No 10 Sqn and is seen at Biggin Hill in 1939. The squadron received its first example in March 1937 and operated the Mk I until May 1939, before moving on to the Mk IV and later still the Whitley V. This particular aircraft went missing over the North Sea on November 4, 1939. The photograph was taken by Sqn Ldr H.H. Chapman, who served with 3 Sqn at Kenley.

  • The Whitley’s cockpit. The object mounted on the control column wheel is the brake operating lever. To the left of the two throttle levers is the similarly-shaped landing lamp dipping control. The access door to the front turret is reached by sliding back the navigator’s seat, which was mounted on rails.
