LE DERNIER CRI: The Hawker Hurricane in its latest form is a fighter-bomber. In addition to the two bombs - which are carried on external streamlined racks - it still has ten machine guns for offence or defence.
Some Hurricane IIBs were converted to carry two 250lb bombs beneath the wings, the load later being increased to 2 x 500lb. They were known as "Hurribombers".

SEA RESCUE: When a British bomber was forced to alight on the Atlantic the main dinghy failed to inflate, and the whole crew of six had to manage with a two-seater. They were later picked up by a Sunderland of an Australian squadron. The crew are seen boarding the flying boat from their dinghy.

70 TONS TO TAKE THE AIR SOON: The new four-engined Martin flying boat is now nearing completion for the U.S. Navy and will be flight-tested this month. The Service designation is the XPB2M-1, but in the Martin series she is the 170. The new boat has a wing span of 200 ft. and an overall length of 170 ft. A crew of eleven will be carried, and the boat will have six gun turrets. The equipment includes a collapsible tender with outboard motor, and several rubber dinghies. The four engines are of 2,000 h.p. each.

AVRO MANCHESTER: This new Rolls-Royce-engined bomber has been flying on operations for some time.
The Avro Manchester, powered by the disappointing and unreliable Rolls-Royce Vulture, was a medium-heavy bomber with a crew of seven. It entered RAF service in November 1940 but had been phased out by mid-1942.

Looking forward in the nose, the first and second pilots sit side by side with the navigator at the back of the first pilot. The bomb-aimer's position can be seen in the bottom right of the picture.
