The forward Scarff gun ring is absent on the RAF Museum’s Stranraer, which is such a snug fit beneath the museum’s Belfast-trussed hangar roof that the wheels had to be left off the beaching gear. Note the external access ladder up to the port engine. The Coventry Ordnance Works quick-firing gun in front of the aircraft was not included among its standard equipment!

A rare colour picture of a Queen Charlotte Airlines Stranraer in a later colour scheme. The orange wingtips were an aid to location in the event of a forced landing or accident.

This threequarter-rear view reveals the two steps in the hull’s planing bottom and the upsweep of the rear of the hull to the tail surfaces. Again, the absence of the gun ring just aft of the lower wing’s trailing edge belies the aeroplane’s military role. The correct individual code letter for Stranraer 920 in RCAF service has yet to be determined; hence the lack of a letter above the black underline forward of the roundel.

A close-up of the nose shows the twin mooring bollards on the prow and the grab rails for the handling party just above the chine of the planing bottom. The hinged watertight door on the front of the hull was opened for bomb sighting. Extensive use of Alclad, coupled with anodic treatment, did much to protect the structure from the depredations of a corrosive salt-water environment.

The underwing stabilising floats were attached by a pair of cross-braced streamline-section struts and held rigid by four lateral bracing wires. They had a single step, and were divided internally into four watertight compartments, each of which had its own drain plug and inspection cover. Thus, if a float was damaged, only the affected compartment/s would take in water, and buoyancy would be maintained.

As war clouds gathered in 1939, Stranraers began to be camouflaged; 209 Squadron’s camouflage pattern differed on the two aircraft in the rear of this formation, while the leading machine remains all-silver.

The upper hull amidships, with control runs and cabling running fore and aft along the roof and sides, well clear of areas where they might be prone to damage by sea water. The use of transverse frames and internal longitudinal members to form the hull gave the structure a clean aerodynamic form that was somewhat negated, perhaps, by the drag-inducing wire-braced biplane wing structure overhead.
