D.520s off the production line of the S.N.C.A. du Midi, the nationalised factory which is mass-producing the type. The D.520 is the fastest of the French fighters now in service, being capable of something like 340 m.p.h. Armament comprises an engine-mounted shell-gun and two or more machine guns. It will be seen that the undercarriage is of wide track.

OUR FASTEST FIGHTER. A special Flight drawing showing features of the Supermarine Spitfire single-seater eight-gun fighter which is now capable of over 380 m.p.h. This high speed is combined with excellent manoeuvrability thanks to the comparatively low wing-loading. The engine is a Rolls-Royce Merlin which gives 1,030 h.p. on 87 octane fuel and considerably more on 100 octane. Each of the eight guns fires at the rate of 1,200 rounds a minute.

The rear section of the fuselage of the Douglas B-19 bomber, under construction in the company's Santa Monica works. With a wing span of 210ft. and a gross weight of 70 tons, it will dwarf all other aircraft. The colossal proportions of the single fin may be seen, and the tailplane appears as large as the wing of many a transport aeroplane. There appears to be a circular turret opening in the top of the fuselage. Note the screens hung from the roof for secrecy.

The large three-engined floatplane is the Cant Z.506B. The Z.506B is used for the Italian Air Force for long-distance patrol, reconnaissance, bombing or torpedo dropping. There is a bomb-aimer's position at the forward end of the torpedo compartment. Two heavy machine guns (12.7mm.) with 350 rounds each, comprises the defensive armament.

The Axis powers seem to be "going nap" on specialised dive-bombers with air brakes to retard the speed in a dive. Last week Germany's Ju 88 was illustrated, and here is an impression of Savoia-Marchetti S.M. 85 twin-engined dive-bombers. It will be seen that the air brakes are lowered to 90 degrees for diving. The bomb load is stowed internally.

IN THE DAYS WHEN FELIXSTOWE WAS FELIXSTOWE: A Short Sunderland in peaceful pre-war surroundings. Last week it figured, with great credit, in the war news. With its 44,600 lb. gross weight it is the largest aircraft used by the R.A.F. The four engines are Bristol Pegasus XXII, rated at 800 h.p. each. The maximum speed is 210 m.p.h.

A VERY BAD MISTAKE. This official photograph showing four German seaplanes moored off Bergen, with a bomb dropping in the left-hand corner, was issued with a caption stating that the aircraft were Heinkel He 115 bombers. After close examination Flight has come to the conclusion that the machines shown are Junkers Ju 52s. An error of this sort could have grave consequences in view of the fact that naval operations might have been conditioned by the assumption that modern torpedo-bomber aircraft were based at Bergen, whereas the machines were actually some of the old transports.

OUR END OF THE ATLANTIC SERVICE: Early next month will start a regular British service between London and Lisbon, linking there with the Pan American Atlantic. Recently an Albatross was flown to Lisbon experimentally, where it is seen at Sintra aerodrome with visitors and hosts. In the centre of the group is our Ambassador to Lisbon, Sir Walford Selby.

A MESSERSCHMITT BOMBER: In Flight of January 18 this year it was stated that the Messerschmitt Me 110 multi-purpose machine could probably be used for bombing, though if employed for dive-bombing it would be advisable to fit air brakes. Here is an exclusive Flight drawing of a new Messerschmitt bomber now in service in the Luftwaffe. The type has already been active over the North Sea. It will be seen that except for the front portion of the fuselage it resembles the fighter version, and that the nose gun-mounting is similar to that on the Heinkel He 111K.

THIRTEEN YEARS AGO. In 1927 a number of British flying boats paid a visit to Scandinavia. They included a Supermarine Southampton, and this photograph shows Sir Samuel Hoare, Air Minister then as now, in the Southampton in which he returned from Copenhagen.
