During the often short periods between raids, the Spitfires are refuelled and rearmed. Here a 602 Sqn Spitfire I is being readied for yet another sortie in April 1940. Note the diamond-shaped gas warning panel on the wing.

Supermarine Spitfire Mk Is of 19 Sqn lined up for the benefit of the press at RAF Duxford on May 15, 1939. The squadron became the first to receive Spitfires, in August 1938.

Spitfire Mk I R6754 in June 1940. Delivered initially to 603 Sqn, this aircraft crashed on landing at Hawarden in November 1940.
