The wing spar is a huge box of corrugated Alclad and it is made in one piece, complete with engine mountings. After being transported from its jig by an overhead crane, it is placed on this vertical turntable which allows it to be handled easily for painting and other workshop processes.

AN AMERICAN HIGH-ALTITUDE FIGHTER. This Republican Lancer, fitted with 1,100 h.p. Pratt and Whitney Twin-Wasp engine, has been designed for work at considerable heights. The engine has a special supercharger, but the operational height of the machine is not available. The United States Government has placed an order amounting to 56 1/2 million dollars with the Republic Aviation Corporation, and the machines are to be built at the firm's works at Farmingdale, N.Y. The span is 36ft. and the wing area 223 sq. ft. With a gross weight of 6,900lb. th; wing loading becomes 31 lb./sq. ft.

COASTAL COMMAND ACQUISITION: The Blackburn Botha, which is already in service as a general reconnaissance and torpedo bomber. It is powered with two 900 h.p. sleeve-valve Bristol Perseus engines. Span is 59ft.; length, 50ft. 11 1/2in.; and height, 18ft. 3in. Points of interest are the streamline power-operated twin gun turret amidships, external bomb racks under wings, twin landing lights in the port leading edge, and the backward-retracting undercarriage.
