Farman M.F.7 "Longhorn"

LOOKING BACK: A typical Saturday afternoon scene at Hendon in 1914. Pierre Verrier is seen trying to touch with his wing tip the tin discs on top of No. 1 pylon. Another attempt succeeded. Standing on the ground is a Grahame-White "box kite"; Note the drooping ailerons.

Aviation Historian 7 / P.Jarrett - Lost & Found
Here is another puzzle. I recently acquired the nice view of an airfield photographed from a Maurice Farman Longhorn biplane, probably about 1914. I do not know whether it was in the UK or Europe, but as it is printed on a British postcard I suspect it was in the UK. Can anyone pinpoint the location?

Frederick Warren Merriam comes in to land at Hendon in a Maurice Farman Longhorn. Merriam was the chief instructor of the Bristol Flying School at Brooklands until he was appointed civilian instructor to the Naval Flying School at Hendon in September 1914, despite having volunteered for active service when war broke out.

N5742 [2] N5749 was a Maurice Farman S.7 built by Brush Coachwork but how it got on to the roof of this hangar at a Royal Naval Air Service airfield is not revealed.
Dick also comments on the photograph of N5742 atop of a Bessoneau hangar. All is not as it seems. The crew are not trying to rescue it, they have just hoisted it up there. Their reason for this bizarre act is that the aircraft is about to do something which is now standard practice in the Royal Navy, launch it off a ski-jump! They are engaged in the first trials of this device but the result of these is unknown.
The photograph of N5749 perched on a hangar in AM.3/88 has resulted in some more sleuthing, this time by Jack Meaden. Another view of this aircraft appeared in "Aeroplane Monthly" for May 1988 and from this it can be seen that the lower booms were smashed by the hangar ridge pole and the wheels and undercarriage legs have either broken off or have gone through the canvas.
The evidence points to the aircraft having stalled on to the hangar roof and not to the theory that this was part of a ski-jump experiment as suggested in Feedback in AM.1/89. More information is required on this subject since the ski-jump idea would have presumably required the aircraft to be faced into the prevailing wind as on a ship. Contemporary seaplane carriers were fitted with level flying-off decks but Campania had a four-degree slope and others were given a similar slope during refit. -

N5742 [2] What nearly - but not quite - happened on his first solo: a Longhorn, in this case N5742, perches neatly atop a Bessoneau canvas hangar.
