    Mac’s Fokker F.VIIA Princess Xenia, which he flew on his transatlantic attempt with Col James Fitzmaurice in September 1927, and on his long-distance attempt with Bert Hinkler in November 1927. It is seen here wearing its original Dutch registration, H-NADK, being refuelled at Schiphol Airport after modification by KLM. Shortly after this photograph was taken it was given the British registration G-EBTS.

  • Mac, personal pilot to Major Andrew Holt from 1928 to 1931, is in the cockpit of Holt’s Fokker F.VIIB Petal at Vienna Airport. Standing in front of the aircraft are members of the Holt family.

    Inside Fokker G-EBTS, looking towards the cockpit. The two 200gal fuel tanks previously used by Admiral Byrd on his attempted flight in an F.VIIA over the North Pole in 1926 may be seen marked with the numbers 3 and 4. Below No 4 tank is a bag containing copies of the Wolverhampton Express and Star, whose publishers were one of the sponsors of the long-distance attempt in 1927.

  • Mac, CO of the Warwick Conversion Unit, is sitting in the centre of the front row of this group photograph taken at RAF Docking in the summer of 1943. On his right is Flt Lt Tony Collins, responsible for navigation training. Next but one to Mac on his left is the Adjutant, Fg Off David Speeks. The aircraft behind the group is one of the unit’s ASR Warwicks.

    “First Imperial Airways machine to carry mail to Johannesburg. Christmas mail going down to Johannesburg, taken from 'JO near Bulawayo” was the Hon Mrs Westenra’s description of this photograph. This most historic air-to-air photograph of the first through airmail service from London to Cape Town in 1931 shows Imperial Airways D.H.66 Hercules G-AAJH City of Basra, piloted by Capt Attwood, on December 19, 1931, about 400 miles north of Johannesburg. On its arrival there, the new Germiston Airport was officially opened and the mail, with the exception of five bags for the Rand, was transferred to Imperial Airways D.H.66 G-AARY City of Karachi to be flown on to Cape Town by Capt Alger, Capt Caspareuthus and Maj Brackley.

  • Mac in uniform as a pilot of the original British Airways in 1936, next to one of the airline’s four ex-KLM, ex-Crilly Airways Fokker F.XIIs. They were sold to Spain in August 1936.

  • The earliest known photograph of Mac, centre, holding the aeroplane logbook, taken in 1919, shortly after he was released by the RAF to join Handley Page Transport as a pilot. In those days civil aviation pilots did not wear uniform. He is standing next to a Handley Page civil O/10 with a mechanic and Capt E.D. Herne on his right and two passengers on his left.
