de Havilland DH.80 Puss Moth
Еще 25 машин собрала фирма "de Havilland Aircraft of Canada".

This flight view of the Moth III shows the cut-away wing roots, mud scrapers on the wheels, typical DH tail unit and tailskid, the latter most suitable for the grass airfields of pre-war years. This and the previous photograph are thought to show c/n 2001, here being flown with only the G- registration prefix under the wing. Together with the next three photos they were published on 25th April 1930.

Grace and Speed: The Moth III should certainly confute the critics who think that a cabin aircraft is synonymous with lack of speed, but whether the tandem seating arrangement will find favour will be an interesting point to watch.

Easy access and good view are the two outstanding features of the new de Havilland "Moth III." The position of the fuselage over the ground is very low, and the occupants can step straight into the cabin. Large windows and a transparent roof give an airy impression as well as a good view.

An unusual and - as yet - unfamiliar physiognomy: The use of an "inverted'' Gipsy engine in the new de Havilland "Moth III" has resulted in a nose which looks a good deal like a heron, what with the low position of the head and the raised shoulders. The machine is probably one of the most efficient, aerodynamically, produced so far, having a top speed some 20 m.p.h. higher than that of the ordinary Gipsy-Moth.

Towards the end of 1930 (but before the additional wing strut was installed on production) photographs were released of an aircraft without registration called 'the 1931 Puss Moth' - as seen on the cover of Archive 3/97. It has the new larger fin and taller rudder and the low-pressure tyres are part of the new Dunlop 'Airwheels' with Bendix pneumatic brakes.

At Croydon on 19.5.38 pilot Mayo in this aircraft disgraced himself by turning right after landing. As following aircraft landed to the right, the standard rule was to turn left after landing, and this is still the case on grass airfields unless radio control instructs otherwise. -

Регистрационный номер: G-ABBS [3] G-ABBS c/n 2020, painted in red and blue Guards colours with polished metal cowlings, was the first of several owned by the Prince of Wales: others being G-ABFV c/n 2122, G-ABNN c/n 2190 and G-ABRR c/n 2209. Although the Prince had RAF Wapiti J9095 for his personal use and his own pilot, the Puss Moth was the opportunity to travel in cabin comfort without flying suit, helmet and goggles and he took immediate advantage of it. G-ABBS had low pressure tyres, an exhaust muff for cabin heating and Handley Page automatic slots on the outer wing leading edges.

Matthews, until recently Chief Instructor at the London Aeroplane Club, started from Croydon on September 16 on an attempt to reach Australia in a shorter time than the 15 1/2 days taken by Hinkler in 1928. He is flying a de Havilland "Puss Moth" with Gipsy III engine. Extra tanks have been installed in the cabin, bringing the total petrol capacity up to 100 gallons. This should give the machine a still-air range of approximately 2,000 miles. Capt. Matthews left Croydon at 6.30 a.m. and landed at Belgrade at 4.15 p.m., having averaged 115 m.p.h.

The Prince of Wales' G-ABFV c/n 2122 has everything; metal propeller, spats, enlarged fin and rudder, tailwheel and automatic slots. A slat-angle quadrant can be seen under the port wing, a strange feature unless it was only fitted for trials, as the pilot is concerned with the IAS, not the slat angle. -

"Puss Moth" de luxe high speed communication aeroplane has been purchased by the Air Ministry for trial by the Royal Air Force. We show three views of this machine. Normal service aircraft of the open cockpit variety necessitate the wearing of special flying clothing, but with the all-enclosed cabin of the Puss Moth extra clothing of any sort is rendered superfluous. Although built in the first instance as a purely civil aeroplane, the Puss Moth will perform aerobatic flying when necessary and has a cruising speed of well over 100 m.p.h. It holds three persons and covers 22 miles on a gallon of petrol.

Aeroplane Monthly 1989-12 / R.Bentley - Swiftly with Shell
Artist LYNN WILLIAMS's painting evokes a June day in 1933, at the start of a flying meeting in the English countryside. The author makes a low pass with the Shell-Mex & BP Ltd Comper Swift, while Joe Taylor of the company's Aviation Department (in plus-fours) looks on by the nose of Gaxy, the venerable Shell-BP Puss Moth. Parked alongside are HRH the Prince of Wales's Fox Moth, with Flt Lt “Mouse” Fielden - later Captain of the King's Flight - by its cockpit, and the Gipsy-engined racing Swift in Household Brigade colours. The artist carried out considerable research for this painting, such that every machine shown was actually airworthy and in those colours during the month in question. The painting was used on the cover of Hugh Scanlan's hook Winged Shell: Oil Company Aviators 1927-1987, published by Alison Hodge, Penzance, 1987.
