    Fokker F.VIIb/3m J-BBCO went into scheduled service with Japan Air Transport Co in 1929 with others of the type. Some of these 8-passenger airliners remained in service until 1936.

    Junkers F 13 J-BAZG was used as a floatplane with duralumin floats on steel tube struts. It had the late model balanced rudder plus an underside extension to counter the forward side area of the floats. It was operated by TKG, the Imperial Maritime Defence Volunteer Association.

    This Cierva C-19 Mk.IV Autogyro J-BAYA is identified as the former G-ABXF and was accompanied to Japan by G-ABXD and 'BXE but these have not been positively identified. J-BAYA was another of the varied Asahi Shimbun fleet as No.60 which can be seen below the flag and strut. Autogyro was a trade name but lost its capital A when it became a descriptive part of the language.

    The Napier Lion engined Fokker CV 2-seater J-BAZA with Asahi Shimbun sunray flag on the fuselage. Designed 6 years after the end of WWI, the CV had many similarities to its ancestor the Fokker DVII single-seat fighter.

    Junkers W 33b D-1198 Europa was flown from Germany to Japan by Baron von Hunefeld in Sept-Oct 1928 after which he presented it to the Imperial Aeronautic Association and it became J-BAWG.

    Stinson SR-5E J-BATC was an early 'straight wing' Reliant. It was flown across the USA in 1934 by Ryotaro Kumagawa then shipped to Japan for the Yomiuri Shimbun.

    Puss Moth J-BAWA c/n 2128 was purchased by TTK in April 1931 and used by the Asahi Shimbun newspaper whose sunray flag symbol is painted on the door. It was the first of twenty, of which 16 were for military use and are not known to have been civil registered.

    J-BBEI was an Aichi-built Heinkel HD25 converted to have a cabin for 2 or 3 passengers. The sesquiplane wings with vee interplane struts were a particular feature of the HD25. This example was operated by NKYK, the Japanese Air Transport Research Association set up by Choichi Inoue in 1922 to operate passenger seaplane services from Sakai City, Osaka.

    Kawasaki C-5 J-BBEA (maker's designation KDC-5) looked every bit the high-speed record breaker that the Asahi Shimbun had ordered; in fact it was as fast and had a longer range than the Type 92 fighter in 1934.

    Ishikawajima (later renamed Tachikawa after its base airfield) started off with the experimental T-2 and followed this with the T-3 2-seat biplane J-BBCA seen here. This was sold to the Asahi Shimbun and remained in service until around 1939

    A later J-BBEA was the Nippon Hachi (Bee) motor glider of 1941. The single central-wheel undercarriage required a runner to hold one wingtip up at the start of take-off as with a glider. The head and feet of someone holding up the far wingtip can just be seen in the photo.
