  • A ditched Horsa glider 30 miles off Clacton, with its crew in a dinghy which had just been dropped by Mac, CO of 280 Sqn, flying an ASR Warwick on patrol with another ASR Warwick flown by Fg Off Ayres. A High Speed Launch was called up to complete the rescue. This was the only glider to come down in the sea while bound for Arnhem on September 17, 1944. The photograph was taken from a 280 Sqn ASR Warwick.

  • On D-Day minus 3, June 3, 1944, 280 Sqn formed up in a hollow square in front of one of their ASR Warwicks, freshly painted with black-and-white invasion stripes, awaiting a special briefing from the AOC of No 16 Group, Air Cdre Frank Hopps. Mac, CO of the squadron, is standing on the far left and the Adjutant, Flt Lt David Speeks, is next to the table.
