1. This shot of a B-2A Spirit was taken on arrival at RIAT Fairford '99. It was the first time I have seen this aeroplane displayed in sunshine, but I did not like the sky.
2. However, I did like this sky, photographed at altitude from an airliner en route to the 1997 LIMA show at Langkawi, Malaysia.
3. So, the sky was fine but the sun was shining on the B-2A from a different direction. After scanning the two negatives directly into Photoshop, the sky was “flipped” so that the lighting on the two shots matched. Then the B-2A was cut out and pasted on to its new sky.

Duxford-based Bristol Blenheim G-BPIV and Fighter Collection Curtiss P-40M Kittyhawk G-KITT were photographed at the Shuttleworth Collection’s Military Pageant on August 1, 1999, using a state-of-the-art £10,000 Kodak DCS 620 digital camera with a Sigma 170-500mm zoom lens. With the zoom pulled back to 170mm (effectively 1-6 x 170 = 272mm), the images just fill the frame nicely.

Shooting this Mustang on my trusty Sigma 170-500mm zoom attached to a Kodak DCS 620 digital camera, I was effectively shooting at 800mm. The problem is controlling the pan at this “unused to” focal length - it was much too easy to chop off bits of aeroplane. The remedy: practice!

This shot of a German Tornado, taken at RIAT Fairford ’98, was completely unusable unless I could sell it to Waitrose, which I couldn’t. So it was scanned into Photoshop and part of the hangar doors were cloned over the sign. The sky was also selected and the blue enhanced.
