    Tom Wood’s stationary F8F Bearcat (extreme left) avoid the chaos breaking out around it as the starboard wing is torn off Howard Pardue’s Bearcat (tailcode P). Meanwhile Jim Reid’s F4U-5 (tailcode WR) takes to the grass and “Ladd” Doctor’s F4U-4 begins its corkscrew to port before catching fire.

    2. The Corsair fall inverted with Doctor still aboard.
    3. The tail has broken off as the Corsair continues to roll; the pilot has been thrown out by this stage.
    4. The rear fuselage buckles under the centre section before the wreckage comes to rest.

    BELL RP-63 Kingcobra N91448/43-11171, owned by Kermit Weeks, is currently being stored at Gillespie Field, San Diego, in a hangar belonging to the San Diego Aerospace Museum. The aeroplane was to have been part of an exhibition, WW2 Through Russian Eyes, being staged at the city's Balboa Park Gymnasium until September 30, 1999, but it was feared that the floor would not carry the weight of the Bell fighter. Kermit landed a Fieseler Storch in the museum's car park to publicise the event!

    THE FIFTIES Festival of Flying at Coventry Airport (RAF Baginton) on August 15, 1999 - which successfully set out to capture the atmosphere of the RAF's “At Home" displays of that era - attracted a crowd of about 8,000. The rarest attendee was the Baker Petroleum Howard 500, N500LN, one of only two of the Lockheed Ventura conversions now flying worldwide. Although it did not take part in the display, it was seen in the air when it departed during the show, heading back to its Exeter base.
