On Saturday October 10, 1998, the offending engine had its oil drained, and the fuel lines and control links were all disconnected. The following Saturday saw the removal of the engine, the crew from the mainland being assisted by personnel from Aircraft Servicing of Guernsey Ltd. The bomber has been on the ground since September 16.

The pilots and Spitfires in this historic formation were: Mk IX MK356, flown by Sqn Ldr Paul Day; Mk IIA P7350 flown by Wg Cdr Al Lockwood, Station Commander at Coningsby; Mk V AB910, flown by Sqn Ldr “Shiney” Simmons; and the two Mk XIXs, PS915 and PM631, flown by Wg Cdr Dave Harrison and Sqn Ldr Clive Rowley respectively.

Nearest the camera is F-AZJB, flown by Daniel Koblet, which was rebuilt by the Aero-Retro team at St-Rambert d’Alban in France. With it is F-AZIO, which was initially worked on at Lausanne in Switzerland, but in 1995 changed hands, the rebuild being completed by Bernard Charbonel (seen here at the controls) and J. Francois.

Note the collapsed airstairs, visible in the main picture, which have made it impossible for visitors to gain access. It is hoped that the Connie will be open again next year, its current peeling paint - the legacy of two decades of exposure to the weather - replaced by a pristine new scheme comprising its original Air France colours.

Civilian Coupe G-ABNT has a similar powerplant, and its owners Shipping and Airlines at Biggin Hill kindly allowed Shuttleworth’s engineers to study it and its mounting. The Coupe departed Old Warden on October 4, 1998.
