On the Channel Island of Guernsey, work to replace the port inner engine on Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress G-BEDF Sally B is progressing. On Saturday October 10, 1998, the offending engine had its oil drained, and the fuel lines and control links were all disconnected. The following Saturday saw the removal of the engine, the crew from the mainland being assisted by personnel from Aircraft Servicing of Guernsey Ltd. The bomber has been on the ground since September 16.

All five Battle of Britain Flight Spitfires flew in formation for the first time ever on September 22, 1998, and were photographed over a foggy Lincolnshire landscape by Martin Bowman. The pilots and Spitfires in this historic formation were: Mk IX MK356, flown by Sqn Ldr Paul Day; Mk IIA P7350 flown by Wg Cdr Al Lockwood, Station Commander at Coningsby; Mk V AB910, flown by Sqn Ldr “Shiney” Simmons; and the two Mk XIXs, PS915 and PM631, flown by Wg Cdr Dave Harrison and Sqn Ldr Clive Rowley respectively.

Miles Falcon Six EC-ACB (ex G-ADLS) of the Fundacion Infante de Orleans is took to the air during the group's display at Cuatro Vientos, Madrid, on September 6, 1998. Displays are held on the first Sunday of each month during the summer. A recent addition to the fleet is Comper Swift G-ABUU, which will commemorate the Swift flown by Spanish pilot Rein Loring to the Philippines in 1932.

Two of the Yakovlev Yak C-11s recovered by Jean Salis from Egypt during the 1980s were photographed flying over the Lons-le-Saunier area in the Jura mountains of Eastern France recently. Nearest the camera is F-AZJB, flown by Daniel Koblet, which was rebuilt by the Aero-Retro team at St-Rambert d’Alban in France. With it is F-AZIO, which was initially worked on at Lausanne in Switzerland, but in 1995 changed hands, the rebuild being completed by Bernard Charbonel (seen here at the controls) and J. Francois.

These pictures, supplied by Roger Carvell, arrived too late for inclusion with his French Connie closes report in last month's newspages, but they clearly depict the current state of Lockheed L1049G Constellation F-BRAD at Nantes. Note the collapsed airstairs, visible in the main picture, which have made it impossible for visitors to gain access. It is hoped that the Connie will be open again next year, its current peeling paint - the legacy of two decades of exposure to the weather - replaced by a pristine new scheme comprising its original Air France colours.

Shuttleworth Collection Southern Martlet G-AAYX, which is nearing completion of a long-term restoration to airworthiness in the collection’s Old Warden workshops, now has its controls connected up, and the ailerons have been waggled for the first time in many years. This picture of the uncovered airframe was taken on October 4, 1998; fabric covering of the tail started on October 17, with the ailerons to follow next.

Pilatus P.2-06 HB-RAW is now flying again after the partial renewal of the plywood skin on its one-piece wooden wing. Mobile Air Service of Bex, Switzerland, carried out the work, and the two-seat Swiss Air Force trainer (c/n 49, formerly U-129) has been completed in the colours of the prototype, HB-GAB/U-101, which first flew in 1945.

Meanwhile a visitor to Old Warden has provided a useful reference source for the Martlet’s Genet Major engine installation. Civilian Coupe G-ABNT has a similar powerplant, and its owners Shipping and Airlines at Biggin Hill kindly allowed Shuttleworth’s engineers to study it and its mounting. The Coupe departed Old Warden on October 4, 1998.
