Making its UK airshow debut at Coventry's “Wings of Victory" display on August 6-7, 1988 was Douglas A-26B Invader N167B/44-34602, owned and flown by Anders Saether of the Scandinavian Historic Flight. The Coventry show was lavish and varied, but attendance was dreadful with a mere 4,000 on the Saturday and 6,000 on the Sunday. The company which staged the show subsequently collapsed with colossal debts of around million.

Recently installed atop a traffic roundabout in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia is Douglas DC-3 5B-CBD (c/n 9623). Formerly 42-23761, FD901, G-AGHM and VP-KGI, it served with BOAC, BEA, Skyways and Cambrian before being sold in Cyprus. It fell derelict at Jeddah, but was restored by Saudia to represent the airline’s first type.

Newly acquired by the Dutch Military Aviation Museum at Soesterberg is a former Greek Air Force Republic RF-84F Thunderflash, seen left en route to Volkel Air base in the first week of August 1988 in formation with an F-16A of 306 Sqn RNethAF.

Clive du Cros's wooden replica of Spitfire prototype K5054 has been moved from his Swindon base to RAF Hullavington for assembly. Du Cros is still awaiting the Weslake reduction gear for the Spitfire’s Jaguar V-12 engine, though, so a first-flight date has not yet been set.

RAAF Museum Harvard VH-SFY/NZ1060 is currently at Bankstown, NSW, for a flying rebuild. It is expected to be operational by October 1988.

Like the Harvard, privately-owned Beech D18S N9723N is expected to be flying in Australia by October 1988. The aircraft was ferried across the Pacific in June.

All four Merlin engines of Canadian Warplane Heritage Avro Lancaster FM213 were run up on August 10, 1988 in preparation for its "official" first flight, scheduled for September 24.

Now on display in the Military Aviation Museum at Soesterberg, Holland, is Fokker D VII 266. Restoration of the ex-Wings and Wheels Collection fighter was completed by Fokker’s technical school on June 23, 1988. Sixty years ago Howard Hughes used this very machine as a cameraship when filming Hell’s Angels.
