R.A.F.'s FIRST TRICYCLE: Douglas D.B.7 Boston bombers originally ordered for the French Air Force are now coming into service with the R A.F. The engines are P & W Twin Wasps with a take-off power of 1,050 h.p.
LAYOUT: This three-quarter front view of the Douglas shows the high-midwing arrangement, the engine air intakes and oil-coolers and the optically flat panel in the bomb-aimer's compartment.Самолёты на фотографии: Douglas A-20 Boston / Havoc / P-70 Nighthawk - США - 1938

LONG-RANGE HEAVY: The A.W. Whitley has carried out raids as far apart as Poland and Milan. Originally two radial engines were fitted, but Rolls Royce Merlins of 1,000 h.p. are now standard. Main dimensions are: Span 84ft., length 70ft. 6in., height 15ft. Disposable load out of a gross weight of 26,000 lb. is 8,500 lb. Max. speed 245 m.p.h. at 16,250ft.

DIPLOMACY BY AIR: Ever since flying became a means of transport, its speed has made it essential for the use of diplomats. Mr. John G. Winant, the newly appointed American ambassador, and his legal adviser, Mr. Benjamin Cohen, flew by Clipper to Lisbon and thence to England in this Douglas DC-3.

ALL IS LOST!: The German inscription to this photograph reads: "The tremendous development of German anti-aircraft forces makes the flight of British bombers to German territory and the destruction of important industrial plants practically impossible, as neutral experts have ascertained time and time again. The photograph shows the start of German destroyer planes for the defence against British night bombers, whose coming has been reported." To us the picture appears to be just an Me 110 with flaps fully down and engines ticking over coming in to land. Our fighters take off when the Luftwaffe arrives.

TEA UP, CHAPS! There are few things more welcome than a "nice, hot cup of tea" on a cold day, and the R.A.F bomber crews have reason to thank the Y.M.C.A. whose mobile tea cars greet them on their return from a "show" and supply "the cup that cheers" as soon as they step out of the aircraft. In the picture is Lord Fermoy, personal friend of the King, who drives one of these tea cars every day to a Coastal Command station, having a quick one with the Wing Commander. Lady Fermoy shares in the work and hands out tea to appreciative Hudson crews. Incidentally, the Y.M.C.A. lost 24 of these cars and their equipment to the value of some £70,000 during the evacuation from France, so financial help will be gratefully received.

SINGLE OR TWIN? In his article on pp. 491-493 Mr. Sydney Camm examines their relative efficiencies. Here is a German twin, the Focke-Wulf 187.
The Focke-Wulf F.W.187 is a twin-engined two-seater fighter of the class known in Germany as a "Zerstorer" (Destroyer). It has two Daimler-Benz D.B.601 engines and is credited with a speed of 320 m.p.h. at ground level, and a service ceiling of 38,000ft. The climb is reported to be 20,000ft. in 5.8 mins.Самолёты на фотографии: Focke-Wulf FW.187 Falke - Германия - 1937
