Addams (far right) discusses the Vanguard with Vultee executives, including sales manager Hugh Fenwick (middle), at the manufacturer’s plant at Downey, California, around the time Addams test-flew the type in December 1940. The flight resulted in a glowing Los Angeles Times report on the type - and pilot - the following month.

Регистрационный номер: NX21755 [7] PRETTY AND FAST: It is reported from America that the British Air Ministry is displaying more than passing interest in this new Vultee Valiant single-seater fighter which is designed for a Pratt and Whitney Double Wasp engine with extension shaft. With the cockpit and cooling gills closed, and the undercarriage and tail wheel retracted, it is one of the most eyeable of modern single-seaters. Apparently there is an oil cooler beneath the cockpit.

Flight 1940-03 / Flight Advertisements
This new Vultee Vanguard Interceptor Pursuit is on the line ready to go. In a moment a test pilot will climb into the cockpit and head it down the runway and into the sky on another test run. Developed in secrecy and built to rigid specifications, the Vanguard is one of the fastest and most advanced airplanes of its type in the world today. It has the same inherent adaptability to quantity production that is characteristic of the Vultee Valiant Basic and Advanced Trainers, and the famous Vultee Attack-Bombers now serving in the air forces of many nations. In recent months Vultee production facilities have been more than doubled to meet current production demands.

CURTISS MOHAWK: Low-wing, tapers on trailing-edge, dihedral from roots. Radial engine, no spinner. Deep oval section fuselage. Undercarriage retracts backwards with fairings for the legs. Tapered tailplane with curved elevators is set at base of fin; rudder has curved trailing-edge.
VULTEE VANGUARD: Low-wing, tapers on both edges to rounded tips; dihedral from roots. Radial engine, no spinner. Fuselage of very similar proportions to the Mohawk but tailplane and fin and rudder have straight taper on both edges, the latter having small, round apex.Другие самолёты на фотографии: Curtiss Hawk 75 / P-36 / Mohawk - США - 1935

Note. - More than one thousand Tomahawks are now in service with British and Dominion squadrons, mostly in the Middle East, and their pilots speak very highly of them. Equally good reports come from Fleet Air Arm pilots of the Buffalo and Martlet fighters, the only criticism being that the undercarriage of the Martlet has a narrow track.
