    NORTH AMERICAN P-51D Mustang 44-14419/G-MSTG, an ex-New Zealand Air Force machine restored by Maurice Hammond in some secrecy over the last four-and-a-half years, returned to the air on July 14, 2001. Rob Davies, the owner of G-HAEC Big Beautiful Doll, was at the controls for the maiden flight, and after refuelling at North Weald at the end of a second sortie he flew the fighter to his grass strip at Woodchurch in Kent, from where the machine will undergo its test programme.

    AS YOU APPROACH the Salis Collection airfield at La Ferte-Alais from the north, take time to visit a small memorial in a field on your right, about a mile south of the airfield. It is in memory of Richard Broggio, one of the Collection's most experienced pilots, who died when Albatros C II replica F-AZAW spun in during the display on May 26, 1996. Salis converted two Tiger Moth airframes to represent Albatros C IIs. The photograph shows the ill-fated replica, F-AZAW, during the Collection's display in May 1985 - shows are held at the Pentecost weekend annually.

  • <...> A year or two ago I chanced upon the other photograph shown here. Clearly taken at the same event, it shows the Bluebird, so named because it was covered with blue rubberised cotton fabric, with a lady in the cockpit, wearing florally extravagant headgear completely unsuited to early aviation. Who was this lady? She is definitely not Mrs Handley Page-to-be, as Frederick did not marry Una Helen Thynne, who was a rather petite woman, until May 18, 1918. Consultation with Harry Fraser-Mitchell of the Handley Page Association drew a blank. If the lady cannot be identified, then perhaps the occasion can be pinpointed. As the second photograph reveals, there was an audience present, so it might have attracted some attention from the local press. Presumably the location was somewhere reasonably close to Creekmouth, Barking, where Handley Page had his first works and flying ground; but that is pure speculation. Philip Jarrett.
