    Reconciled at last. In April 1990, a Chinese MiG-15 was acquired by the Champlin Fighter Museum in California to complete its Korean War display. Both aircraft are still at the museum, the Sabre in the colours of Major F.C. Blesse of the 334th FIS.
    Recently restored by the Champlin Fighter Museum in Mesa, Arizona, a Chinese MiG-15 loaned by Phoenix collector J. Curtis Earl is seen intake-to-intake with an old adversary in the shape of Champlin's F-86 Sabre.

    F-80 fighters were used not only by fighter squadrons, but also by reconnaissance units, where they provided escort for RB-26, RF-51D, and RF-80 photo-gathering aircraft. This F-80C Shooting Star (47-590), sitting on a pierced-steel planking (PSP) hardstanding, wears the distinctive badge and tail marking of the 45th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, the “Polka Dots", a part of the 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing at K-14 Kimpo Air Base, Korea, in August 1953.

  • This is the only known photograph of F-80C Shooting Star 49-713 Ilene M., assigned to 1st Lt Jack Smith but flown on November 8, 1950, by 1st Lt Russell Brown. Brown is credited with shooting down a MiG-15 in history's first confirmed jet-versus-jet aerial battle.

    This F-86F-30-NA of the 334th Fighter Interceptor Squadron was flown by Captain Ralph S. Parr, one of the most successful pilots of the Korean War, scoring a total of ten kills. Barb/Vent de la Morte was one of three Sabres used by Parr during the war.

  • Lt-Cdr W.T. Amen was the first US Navy pilot to shoot down a MiG-15 fighter. Amen was the commander of Fighter Squadron 111 (VF-111), the “Sundowners", and the first of several Panther pilots to prevail over the MiG.

  • VMF(N)-542 was one of the Navy and Marine squadrons that brought the Douglas F3D-2 Skyknight to Korea to do nocturnal battle with the foe. The two-seat, twin-jet Skyknight racked up eight aerial victories, the first of which is credited as a Yakovlev Yak-15, although there is some doubt as to whether the other side actually had Yak-15s in the conflict.

  • This all-black RB-45C Tornado (48-0027) belonged to the 84th Bomb Squadron, 91st Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, which sent a three-aircraft detachment to Yokota, Japan, for ops over Korea in December 1950. At least one aircraft in the detachment was painted black after one of the type was shot down.

    Captain Ben Fithian and Lt Sam Lyons of the 319th FIS flew this F-94B-5-LO on January 30 1953, when they scored the type's first kill, shooting down an unidentified aircraft by radar, probably a "Bedcheck Charlie" Po-2.

    The Lockheed F-94 arrived in the Korean theatre in mid-1951, and was intended as a replacement for the F-82 Twin Mustang. The type enjoyed modest success against nocturnal nuisance raiders, and was credited with three kills by the end of the conflict, including a MiG-15.
    Seen on a training flight over Japan in 1954, this F-94B was serving with the US Far East Air Forces, attached to the Japanese Air Defense Force.

    Although No 77 Sqn (RAAF) scored three confirmed victories against MiGs, only one appeared on the official USAF kill list, that of Fg Off Bruce Gogerly on December 1, 1951. Gogerly was flying A77-15 Elyana on that occasion, but A77-17 Bowl 'Em Over was his assigned aircraft.

    No 77 Sqn of the Royal Australian Air Force was deployed to Korea in July 1950, and was originally equipped with Mustangs, converting to Meteor F.8s in May 1951. By the end of the conflict, No 77 Sqn had flown 4,836 missions, and had racked up a score sheet of three MiG-15 kills and three prop-driven aircraft, for the loss of 42 pilots.
