The flight to the North African base covered a distance of more than 1,200 miles (1,930 km) and took about 2hr. Italy was one of seven European NATO nations, which flew the F-84F. These three Italian Air Force F-84Fs were assigned to 155° Gruppo, 50° Stormo.

The U.S.A.F. has recently introduced a revised system of identification markings for fighters and fighter/bombers. Formerly the lettering U.S. Air Force appeared on the fin and rudder above the serial number. As this photograph of a new production Republic F-84F-56-RE Thunderstreak shows, the lettering has been removed to the front fuselage and the last digit of the contract year (52-7010) has now been dropped from the tail serial. Similarly the "buzz number" (FS-010) formerly on the nose is now to the rear of the national insigne.

In this photo of 78th FBS Thunderstreak 52-6780 the aft ends of the JATO bottles may just be seen behind the tail-end of the wing-mounted fuel tank.

Republic F-84F with a selection of some of the loads it can carry externally up to a total of 6,000 lb. In addition to its normal fixed armament of six Colt-Browning M-3 machine-guns of .5-in. calibre, it has twenty-four 140-lb. 5-in. H.V.A.R. outboard of which are two 2,000-lb. bombs of an obsolescent type. The 1,000-lb. bombs at the end are more representative of jet carriage. The 230- or 450-U.S. gal. external tanks in the background can be used as napalm weapons.

One of a number of "Buddy" refuelling systems now being developed in America is the one shown here fitted to a Republic F-84 Thunderstreak. Developed by the Republic Company it consists of two auxiliary wing tanks, one containing fuel and the other consisting of two compartments. The forward compartment of the latter contains fuel and the rear the refuelling mechanism. As can be seen, this is a short boom to which a length of hose and a drogue are attached. Fuel can be drawn from all tanks of the tanker rather than just that from the buddy tank alone.

The desire on the part of some people to hang aeroplanes from things including cables, balloons, airships and other aeroplanes goes back to the very early years of powered flight. Shown here, is one of the last serious attempts made to do this by, of all people, the USAF, who actually deployed a limited number of Republic RF-84K-carrying Convair GRB-36Ds operationally from the end of 1956, through most of 1957. Shown here and taken in May 1953 is a view of the operational evaluation trials involving a Convair GRB-36F and a Republic YRF-84F. The intention with this particular combination was not to carry some form of fighter protection for the mother aircraft, but to extend the range of the Air Forces' photographic reconnaissance capability by using the mother ship to fly the fast RF-84 to within credible fuel range of what was to be photographed. The arrival in service of the fast, longer-ranged Douglas RB-66s must have come as a relief to those tasked with operating the by now extremely vulnerable GRB-36s.

A sad sight at Preveza military reserve airfield (which has now been renamed Aktion) in Greece during April 1996 were these Greek Air Force F-84F Thunderstreaks which, despite having been derelict in open storage for well over a decade, were declared under the CFE Treaty as front line fighter aircraft. Therefore, to comply with arms reductions under the provisions of the Treaty, all have been savagely hacked with a mechanical digger, destroying any chance of them even now being given to museums. A similar fate has befallen the many F-84Fs in store at Athens/Hellenikon.
