This rather bedraggled Hurricane Mk XII with tropical filter beneath the nose was probably captured early in the war. Part of the radiator housing beneath the fuselage is missing - and note the Japanese markings

The prototype Ki-92, Tachikawa’s answer to the Curtiss C-46, flew disappointingly and only once, in the spring of 1945. It is shown here sheltering a Tachikawa-built Ki-43-II fitted with shackles for 550lb bombs for the anticipated invasion of Honshu.

The Tachikawa company’s two factories built almost 2,700 Nakajima Ki-43 fighters, the JAAF’s most important aircraft, which served on every front until replaced by newer types later in the war. The type was also used on suicide missions.

The Type 98 Ki-36 (“Ida”), designed in 1937, remained in service in the ground support role until 1945, at which time it was relegated to suicide attack missions. Note underwing shackles and what appears to be a dive-bomb sling.

Регистрационный номер: J-BAFA The Ki-54 was originally designed as an advanced trainer, but later versions were used as patrol bombers and light transports, such as J-BAFA. More than 1,300 were built, powered by 450 h.p. Army Type 98 engines; versions for civil use were designated Y-59.

The Tachikawa Aeroplane Co Ltd, successors to the Ishikawajima company in 1936, continued the production of light aircraft, notably the Army Type 95. Shown here is the TS-1 ultralight single-seater of 1937 and the licence-built Lockheed 14WG3, 64 of which were built by Tachikawa during the period 1939-42.

The very streamlined Ki-77 was the result of sponsorship by the Asahi Shimbun newspaper for a nonstop Tokyo - New York flight, but the outbreak of war prevented this. However, the first of two prototypes set an unofficial closed circuit record of 19 circuits totalling 10,212 miles in 57hr 12min at Sinkiang. The second prototype was shot down, but the first survived the war to be taken to the USA, where it was eventually scrapped.

Conceived in 1939, the Ki-74 had still not achieved full production when the war ended, only 16 being built. Revived in 1941 as a long-range high-altitude bomber capable of reaching the US mainland, it was not delivered until 1944.
