A trio of early production Swift F.1s shortly after delivery to the RAF; WK205 leads WK211 and WK212, all in natural metal and lacking any squadron markings. All three went to 56 Sqn.

An interesting collection in the works. In the background are the Type 535 Swift prototype VV119 and the first two production Swift F.1s, WK194 and WK195. In the foreground is WJ965, one of the two Type 541s, with a nose pitot boom and tufting on its white-painted tailcone.

The Swift Mk 4 prototype, WK198, was a converted Mk 1. It made its maiden flight, with Mike Lithgow at the controls, at Chilbolton on May 2, 1953, and established a new speed record in Libya in September that year.

The Type 525, the true prototype of the Scimitar naval fighter, had more conventional tail surfaces. Serialled VX138, it first flew In April 1954. This photograph was taken by Charles E. Brown.

First flown on August 29, 1952, the Supermarine Type 529, VX136, seen here during carrier trials, was almost indistinguishable from its immediate forebear, the Type 508. However, it could be identified by the small strakes extending forward from the butterfly tailplanes.

Poor but rare cine stills taken by the author from a D.H.89 in June 1955, depicting the Type 525 VX138 in the “semi-navy” scheme applied only shortly before the aircraft was lost in a crash at Boscombe Down on July 5.
