  • This Douglas SBD-1 of VMB-2 was 1629. The engine failed on approach to North Island and the pilot, Capt. W E Dickey, was slightly injured when the aircraft hit the roof of a building. It was not a write-off, which probably demonstrated the punishment an SBD could absorb.

  • Регистрационный номер: JM739, G-AKWA

Supermarine Sea Otter ASR.I JM739 was built by Saro. It saw post-war service with the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment at Boscombe Down before going to the Station Flight at RNAS Dale in 1946/47. It was put up for sale and registered G-AKWA but British South American Airways did not proceed with conversion and it was scrapped at Langley in 1949.

  • Регистрационный номер: RD873

Sea Otter ASR.II RD873 was also built by Saro and the whole batch was delivered post-war. Delivered first to 799 Squadron in May 1947, it was passed to No. 781 Squadron, also at Lee, in May 1948, acquiring the code '312' and the station designator 'LP' as seen in this photograph. Overall silver finish has been applied. RF873 stayed with No. 781 Squadron until sold for scrap on 28th October 1953.

  • Grumman J2F-1 0176 was the carrier Ranger's utility aircraft. One wheel has been torn off and, we think, collected from its resting place and put beside the aircraft. George Kernahan has examined the records of this aircraft and it would appear the incident took place at Maslaca Field, Maui, Hawaiian Islands, on 2nd May 1937. The pilot, CdrAE Montgomery, hit his right wheel on a sandbank when the aircraft dropped on approach. The wheel struck the leading edge of the lower right wing but no damage is evident, unless the pilot is leaning on it. Montgomery went on to become one of the top carrier task force commanders of World War Two.

  • Consolidated P2Y-1 on the ramp at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor. Unfortunately, the serial is invisible but the code 10 P 1 shows it belongs to VP-10F. VP-10F flew its six P2Y-1s from San Francisco to Hawaii on 10th/11th January 1934, breaking three seaplane records in the process. They remained there until replaced by P2Y-2s and P2Y-3s in 1936. The XP2Y-1 had flown in 1932, originally with three engines, but 23 P2Y-1s twin-engined patrol bombers were ordered in July 1931. An order for 23 improved P2Y-3s followed. Surviving P2Ys were withdrawn from operational use in 1941 and went to Pensacola as trainers.

  • Регистрационный номер: K1012, K1461

An embarrassing moment at Abu Sueir as Atlas K1012/5 and Atlas TM K1461/3 have a coming-together. This has resulted in damage to both port wing-tips on K1012 while K1461 has tipped up. The damage was repaired and both continued to serve as trainers but K1012 crashed on 20th December 1933, killing the pilot. K1461 was shipped back to the UK in 1936 where it was SOC on arrival.
