A Battle of No.142 Squadron at an Armee de l'Air airfield at the beginning of 1940. The long transparency that was the hallmark of the Battle is interesting in that it has been painted over in an attempt to reduce reflections from the sun that might reveal its presence.

A gathering of French Lancasters at Agadir in 1959. The aircraft in the centre is a search-and-rescue aircraft of Flottille 55S, Agadir being the home of 55S and 56S Lancasters at this time. A dispensing chute has been fitted under the rear turret. The number "103" is carried on the lower part of the fin and is presumably the SGACC identity.

With the Mediterranean closed to normal shipping after Italy entered the war in June 1940, a reinforcement route to the Middle East was set up across Africa. Ships unloaded aircraft at Takoradi in the Gold Coast where they were prepared for the long haul through Nigeria, Chad and the Sudan to Egypt. For multi-engined aircraft there were fewer problems than for single-seat fighters and the bulk of the Hurricanes destined for fighter squadrons in the Middle East had to be provided with escorts. The photograph shows one of the Blenheims used to lead convoys of six fighters along the route. The fuselage aft of the turret and the tailplane are painted white to make the lead aircraft more visible as it navigated its way across jungle and desert.

This Blenheim IV appears to have tipped up on landing and has been righted. The nose is fairly well flattened but replaceable. It carries the Cross of Lorraine emblem of the Free French under the wing and is presumably in part of their territory in Central Africa.

Регистрационный номер: F-AQBC In common with British civil aircraft, French airliners adopted national markings. This Dewoitine D-338 F-AQBC has tricolour bands round wings, fuselage and under the registration, plus tail stripes.

One of a variety of types recovered by the French during the liberation, this Caudron C-245 Luciole was impressed into the Forces Francaises de I'Atlantique in 1944 which were engaged in reducing German pockets along the Biscay coast.
