THE BIG TWIN: Designed originally as a 36-passenger airliner, this new Curtiss-Wright, powered with two 14-cylinder Wright Cyclones, has been converted to a troop transport for 40 soldiers. It is the world's largest twin, weighing 38,000 lb. loaded and was described in Flight for January nth, 1940. Designed first with twin fins and rudders, it has now been changed to a single.Самолёты на фотографии: Curtiss-Wright C-46 / CW-20 Commando - США - 1940

NOT TOO OLD AT 40: Though the U.S. Army Air Corps "pursuit" specification P-40 is not the very latest, its most recent variation is the Curtiss Kittyhawk, known as the P-40D, and looks a very handy fighter. With the increasing power of the Allison V-1710 engine, the latest model of which has passed tests for a take-off rating of 1,325 h.p., the Kittyhawk should be little if anything behind our latest Spitfire.

PRODUCED by extensive sub-contracting at "dispersed" factories, the Hercules-engined Bristol Beaufighter is an up-to-the-minute all-metal stressed-skin design. Our artist's drawing shows the "break-down" of this machine into its main components, each of which is constructed to a high degree of completion at its factory before being brought together tor assembly. All components connect by means of pin joints except the stern section of the fuselage, which has a ring of small bolts.

The single-sleeve valve of each Hercules cylinder is made to rotate and reciprocate by the ingenious crank and ball joint mechanism shown in the two bottom sketches. The crank is driven through a train of gears from the crankshaft of the engine, and it will be noted that the ball is arranged to slide to and fro on the crank as it rotates. The ports can be seen in the sleeve and wall just below the junk head, as the cylinder head of a sleeve-valve engine is termed.
