CLIVE AND MARK EDWARDS of Edwards Brothers Aviation at Welling, Kent, well known for the healing powers they can bring to distressed propliners, have recently rescued a Douglas C-47 from dereliction near Beale Air Force Base (AFB), California, in the USA and flown it to the Yankee Air Museum (YAM) at Chino, California.

ONE OF THE THREE Spitfire Mk IXs recovered from Burma (Myanmar) by Golden Aviation of Missouri in spring 1999, ML119, was due to arrive back in the UK on October 30, 54 years after departing Britain’s shores, reports Peter Arnold. Peter Monk and Mike Simpson are the new owners, and the aeroplane will go into storage in Kent before joining Spitfire IX TA805, also owned by Monk, under rebuild and due to fly in 2001.

A TRIP TO Papua New Guinea in August 2000 by Justin Taylan, author of the Pacific Wrecks Database website, revealed that large-scale scrapping has taken place over the last five years, and that many aircraft wrecks that were in reasonable condition have now disappeared, reports Elliott Smock. Several interesting sites were still found, including a B-24 Liberator and P-38 Lightning Japanese Sandman II at Popondetta, near the Solomon Sea coast of Papua New Guinea.
Japanese types still existing include a Mitsubishi A6M3 Zero at Kokapo, Rabaul, shown, and a Kawasaki Ki-48 Lily at Danip. It is hoped that these relics will not be scrapped or allowed to deteriorate further, and can be recovered for restoration before it is too late.

WALLY FISK'S AMJET company has nearly completed the restoration of Supermarine Seafire F.XV PR503 at Anoka Airport in Minneapolis, USA. Work aft of the firewall has been completed with the exception of some minor finishing of systems and some wiring in the cockpit. The Rolls-Royce Griffon VI engine has been rebuilt, becoming the only example of this mark of “short” Griffon in running condition, and the four-bladed propeller has been overhauled. A replacement arrester hook has been constructed to original plans, and work is now concentrated on shaping new cowlings.

MILES MAGISTER T9768/G-AIUA, which became famous in the late 1940s and early 1950s as the the mount of C.A. Nepean Bishop, the leading post-war exponent of Magister aerobatics, has been acquired by collector Bob Trickett. It was moved from long-term storage in Sussex to a new home near Kings Lynn in early September 2000.
