    Magister G-ALIO Pongo about to have its propeller swung in August 1955, next to SCAN 30 F-BGTD. Formerly P2500, the Maggie was civil-registered on February 2, 1949, but crashed near Sevenoaks on July 6, 1958.

    The SCAN 30 was a French licence-built Grumman Widgeon; F-BGTD was at Croydon on August 11, 1955. It subsequently became VP-KNV of Lake Air Charters, Tanganyika, and appeared at Croydon in those colours on November 24, 1957.

    An unusual sight on August 16, 1955, was Avro XIX EL-ABC, formerly G-AKUD and VM373. As the former, it served briefly with the British Air Attache in Paris, and later with the A&AEE before civilianisation and sale to Liberia as EL-ABC.

    Surrey & Kent Flying Club adopted this blue-and-yellow colour scheme in the mid-1950s and it appeared on Tiger Moths, Chipmunks and a Prentice. Tiger G-ACDJ is still airworthy and attended the Moth Club Rally at Woburn in August 2000.

    Vickers Vikings were a rarity at Croydon, so it was interesting to see Trek-Air’s ZS-DKI (ex G-AHOW) on June 7, 1955. The reason for the missing port engine is not known.

    Probably the first post-war visit of a Japanese-registered civil aircraft to Croydon was this Twin Bonanza, JA-5022, on August 9, 1956.

    One of only two British-registered Piaggio P.136L five-seat amphibians, G-AOFN was granted its C of A on August 4, 1955 and appeared at Croydon six days later. It returned to Italy in August 1958 and was subsequently broken up.

  • Percival Provosts occasionally passed through on delivery to export customers. These four, on July 20, 1957, were for the Sudanese Air Force. Top surfaces of the wings were dark green, and Arabic serials 1 to 4 with Roman equivalents were carried.
