de Havilland DH.114 Heron
Компания "de Havilland" решила развить успех двухмоторного самолета Dove с учетом тех же основных принципов, приведших к появлению особо удачного четырехмоторного DH.86B (после двухмоторного DH.84 Dragon), спроектировав в итоге увеличенную четырехмоторную модификацию DH.114 Heron. Простота и надежность стали главными при создании новых самолетов с кабиной для экипажа из двух человек и салоном вместимостью до 14 пассажиров (17 мест - без установки туалета). Причем с неубирающимся трехстоечным шасси отпала необходимость установки сложной гидросистемы, а превосходные взлетно-посадочные характеристики для эксплуатации коротких ВПП обеспечивались хорошей конструкцией крыла и использованием воздушных винтов с изменяемым шагом. Самолеты оснащались четырьмя моторами Gipsy Queen 30, имевшими большой межремонтный ресурс.
Прототип нового самолета совершил первый полет 10 мая 1950 года, а первый серийный Heron 1 был приобретен компанией "New Zealand National Airways" и, как и все последующие самолеты, имел хвостовой стабилизатор с большим поперечным V. Седьмая серийная машина, ставшая прототипом для модификации Heron 2, получила убирающееся шасси, что увеличило скорость и сократило расход топлива. Данный вариант оказался самым популярным - почти 70% из 150 собранных машин семейства Heron. Несмотря на относительно скромный "тираж", самолеты Heron эксплуатировались в 30 странах, некоторые из них - в крупных авиакомпаниях, а другие - в VIP-вариантах (включая четыре машины, летавшие в британском королевском авиаотряде, дислоцированном на авиабазе Бенсон). До 25 машин использовались как самолеты связи в Министерствах обороны девяти стран.
Позднее самолет Heron модифицировался в рамках ряда программ. Компания "Riley Turbostream Corporation" в США выпускала самолет Riley Turbo Skyliner с новыми двигателями. Его стандартную силовую установку заменили на двигатели Lycoming IO-540 мощностью 290 л. с. (216 кВт), с восемью горизонтально расположенными цилиндрами, с турбокомпрессорами или без них - пожеланию заказчика. Гораздо более серьезной стала конверсия, выполненная специалистами "Saunders Aircraft Corporation" (Гимли, провинция Манитоба, Канада). Самолет, получивший обозначение Saunders ST-27, имел удлиненный фюзеляж для салона вместимостью 23 места, а также новое крыло с новым главным лонжероном. Четыре мотора Gipsy заменили на два турбовинтовых двигателя Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-34 мощностью 750 л. с. (559 кВт). Всего собрали 12 машин ST-27. Был также закончен еще и прототип улучшенной модели ST-28.
Следует заметить, что в конце 1959 года произошла общая консолидация британской авиапромышленности: известная компания "de Havilland" влилась в концерн "Hawker Siddeley Group", на правах отделения "de Havilland Division" компании "Hawker Siddeley Aviation", и вскоре потеряла свою самобытность. Последние самолеты конструкции собственно компании "de Havilland" - трехдвигательный авиалайнер DH.121 и двухдвигательный реактивный бизнес-джет DH.125 - вошли уже в продуктовую линейку монстра "Hawker Siddeley" (позже концерна "BAe"),

G-AORG saw service with Jersey Airlines from 1956 to 1962; it was then operated by the Royal Navy as a Sea Heron (XR441) until its retirement in 1989, when it was bought by its present operators, Duchess of Brittany Ltd. Although several Herons remain registered in the UK, this is the only example which is currently airworthy.

At 1835hr G-AOXL left the apron and at 1839hr it was airborne, bound for Rotterdam. This was the last service to operate from Croydon, and the airport was officially closed at 2230hr. On the left is the nose of Morton's Dove G-ANAN which had operated the last service to arrive at the airport. It landed at 1720hr, having flown from a Newmarket race meeting.
