    Built in 1930, the Waco has been through several restorations; Hayes spent a year and a half bringing it to its present pristine condition, and flew it for the first time in May 1987.

    Hayes’s attention to detail is apparent in the meticulous gap-sealing of NC113Y’s aileron hingelines. The wing and aileron structure is all-wood, while the fuselage and tail are fabricated in welded steel tube.

    Fixed to the door of the forward-cockpit baggage compartment is NC113Y's original 1930 maker's plate. Allotted the Waco construction number 3297, the aircraft was sold new to the Tex Rankin School of Aeronautics at Seattle for about $3,650.
