One example of the A-36 dive-bomber version of the Mustang was received for test in March 1943 by the A & AEE. This version was not adopted by the RAF and in service with the USAAF proved to be ineffective in this role.

Регистрационный номер: AG385 What had started as a perfectly normal landing went sadly astray as Mustang AG385 of No.41 OTU swung on landing and attempted to demolish one of Poulton's blister hangars on 14 August 1943, leaving the pilot in his cockpit but short of wings, engine and most of the tail.

The Spitfire Mk XVI was originally essentially a Mk IX with an American-built Packard Merlin 266 engine, but later production Mk XVIs incorporated a “low-back” aft fuselage with a teardrop canopy and the broader-chord rudder fitted to later production Mk IXs, all modifications which are visible on this Central Gunnery School Mk XVI.Самолёты на фотографии: Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX / XVI - Великобритания - 1942

In AM. 3/77, we covered the Blenheim V - but that was before AM could take photographs. The accompanying photographs repair that omission and all but BA612 have been kindly supplied by Geoffrey Rowland who served with No.114 Squadron in North Africa. The aircraft are seen at Canrobert, Algeria, where four Blenheim V squadrons formed a wing, Nos.13, 18, 114 and 614 Squadrons. Although officially No.114, whose aircraft are shown here, was detached to Canrobert while the others were based there until 12 January 1943 (misprinted as 12 February 1943 in the AM article and in "Squadrons of the Royal Air Force"), it would appear that to all intents, No.114 operated from Canrobert from 5 December 1942. Photographs of Blenheim Vs in the field are relatively rare.

Регистрационный номер: K4577 [4] Singapore III K4577 at the Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment at Felixstowe in November 1935. This boat was the first of a production batch of nine conforming to Specification R.14/34 (K4577-4585), four preceding Singapore IIIs, K3592-K3595, being regarded as development aircraft. K4577 made its first flight on 8 March 1934 and was fitted with uprated Rolls-Royce Kestrel VIII and IX engines. It remained at Felixstowe for armament and equipment trials although officially on the strength of No.209 Squadron.

As a service to readers who are having difficulty in doing engine changes on their executive FE.2Bs, we show the method on the back cover. Having idly wondered how this was done amidst all those struts and wires for many years, it was interesting to come across an illustration of the purpose-built engine stand to be used.

Регистрационный номер: J9166 A Fairey IIIF of No.8 Squadron at Khormaksar, Aden, J9166. It is interesting in that the figure in white in the rear cockpit is Amy Johnson, who passed through Aden on her way back from her solo flight to Australia in May 1930. In view of her reputation for being unable to land an aircraft properly, it seems unlikely that they allowed her to fly it! The parasol held by the fourth person from the left was not standard RAF issue, even in Aden. Local colour is added by the camel in the background.
