    This photograph of Super Cub ET-ACY shows it to have been fitted with a short lower wing, presumably to give improved low-speed control and STOL performance in spraying operations. ARCHIVE page 84/58 and 84/86 featured a similar conversion known as the Aeromod Loadstar 100. ET-ACY differs from the Loadstar primarily by having end-plates on the lower wing tips. We would be grateful if any reader can positively identify this conversion.

  • A Sablatnig P.III wearing Estonia's 1919 registration prefix E- under the starboard wing but the rest of the numerical marks cannot be seen.     An unidentified Czech airliner which appears to have suffered an accident involving fatalities. The registration OK-A.. and the handwritten date 1934 are the only clues provided. Our thanks to Paul Wakefieid for submitting the print which he would like identified.
    Regarding the Czech photo on page 87/55 and comments page 87/81, we can confirm that it showed Letov S.32 OK-ADB. The accident was on 26.6.34 at Karlovy Vary airfield when the vertical tail tore off in flight at about 70m following flutter. Pilot Karel Tomicek (named on print), one other crew and one passenger (total occupants) were killed. The four other S.32s were grounded as a result. OK-ADB was the second aircraft and first production model with C of A dated 18.1.34 but curiously in the photograph it clearly carries the type number or c/n S.32.4.

    Gipsy Moth G-AAAA, c/n 805, shown with coupe top allowing comparison to be made with the open cockpit view on page 87/11. First owned by Capt Geoffrey de Havilland, it was used to break the lightplane World Height Record in July 1928 by flying to 19,980 feet with Mrs de Havilland as passenger. It is probable that the intense cold at this height was the reason for fitting the enclosed hood.
