One that got away with it was RN271 of No.201 Squadron. After hitting a rock and sinking at St.Peter Port, Guernsey, on 15 September 1954, she was refloated and not struck off charge until 30 September 1957
The photograph has turned out not to be RN271 but PP122! Just how the photo acquired the former serial number is not clear. It was, in fact, struck off charge on 15 September 1954, the same day as it suffered its taxying accident and foundered. Once the tide had gone out, it was beached but as the Sunderland was going out of service and a number of aircraft were in store and available as a replacement, it was not worth while to repair PP122. Our thanks to Keith James of Guernsey for pointing this out.
