On page 85/118 we published a photo of Dornier Wal M-MWAP on HMS "Eagle" on 29.6.29 and had earlier given details of how the "Numancia" put down in the Atlantic near the Azores due to fuel shortage. Now Brian Laws has found some photos which must have been taken originally by a member of "Eagle's" crew. The comments are those found on the reverse of these prints.
"Plane hoisted on crane", note Spanish roundel on nose and the serial V-16 on the rudder.

"Plane being towed to ship by Eagle's sea boat crew with airmen still on the plane", taken at about 4.00 am in the morning.

"The Spanish seaplane with Major Blanco on board and his three companions" with lifting gear being attached.
Our thanks to Mr.Laws for the loan of the photos. We can add that the CASA-built Wal was actually lost on 21.6.29 and rescued on 29.6.29, though another photo not included here mentions the crew's "ten-day" ordeal. The land background to our photo on p.85/118 was not identified, nor was the date which could be several days after the actual rescue.

  • Регистрационный номер: G-ASCO

Peter Amos acquired four photos of this accident at a collectors' fair and sent them in to us in the hope of obtaining some information about the incident. The aircraft is British Klemm L.25c-Ia G-ACSO which was actually written-off in a hangar collapse in 1952. The prints, of which we reproduce one here, have a pre-war appearance but the only real clue may be the note on one of them identifying "H.H.Syke's Aeroplane" which presumably refers to the owner. Anyone who can suggest the date and location of the accident, which seems to be an overshoot into a fence and hedge, is welcome to write to the Editor. This is one case in which we do not know the answer in advance!
