Do.J Wal

   - Do J для Испании, Чили, Нидерландов и СССР с моторами HS 8Fb, "Игл" IX, "Лайон" V, HS 12Lbr или LD 12Eb, вооружение 2x7,69 (в СССР - 4x7,62);
   - Do J для СССР, Аргентины и Югославии с моторами BMW VIE6,0, удлиненной хвостовой частью, измененным оперением; аналогичный вариант строился в Испании и Нидерландах; вооружение 4x7,69 или 4x7,62; бомбы до 500 кг; в Югославии переделывались под моторы "Кестрел" V;
   - Do 15 (Do JIId) для Люфтваффе с моторами BMW VIE7.3, новым оперением, вооружением 3x7,69, бомбы до 200 кг;

    Our thanks to Mr.Laws for the loan of the photos. Now Brian Laws has found some photos which must have been taken originally by a member of "Eagle's" crew. The comments are those found on the reverse of these prints.

The Commandant will be accompanied by Artillery Captain Ruiz Alda, as navigator, and by a mechanic, and hopes to commence his trip early in the New Year. The Dornier "Wal" has an empty weight of 3,500 kgs. (7,700 lbs.) and a useful load of the same amount. Its range is stated to be 3,000 kms. (1,865 miles), and the top speed is given as 205 kms. Italy became the biggest operator of passenger-configured Dornier Wals, with some 26 being used on the early Italian air services. Built in numerous variants, the Wal was powered by various engines, this Piaggio-built example, I-AZDI of SANA, being fitted with a pair of Bristol Jupiter IVs in the type’s distinctive tandem configuration.

    Italian-built Wal I-AZDT appears to have BMW VIs and may have been delivered to Luft Hansa.
    I-AZDT was one of the early Piaggio-built cabin Wals. It had BMW 6 engines and the later unstepped fin and rudder with no rudder balance. The "park bench" fitments can be seen on ailerons and elevators and the cabin has circular windows.

    J-BCDO "Shirahato" (White Dove) was built by Kawasaki in 1930 with 500 hp Kawasaki-built BMW 6 twelve cylinder upright vee watercooled engines. The airframe was unique in having a more pointed bow with the cockpit right forward and the circular-window cabin moved back, plus two additional struts each side from the top of the hull to the sponsons. Unfortunately "Shirahato" broke up in a snowstorm and a second similar aircraft was taken out of service.
