J-BCDO "Shirahato" (White Dove) was built by Kawasaki in 1930 with 500 hp Kawasaki-built BMW 6 twelve cylinder upright vee watercooled engines. The airframe was unique in having a more pointed bow with the cockpit right forward and the circular-window cabin moved back, plus two additional struts each side from the top of the hull to the sponsons. Unfortunately "Shirahato" broke up in a snowstorm and a second similar aircraft was taken out of service.

Four of the Wals of the SANA fleet are shown here at anchor at the Ostia (Rome) seaplane base in 1926. From top to bottom they are I-DAUR, I-DEAR, I-DAER and I-DOAR. The smaller flying boats on the right appear to be a Savoia S-16 or similar at a distance and a Macchi-Nieuport M-18 as the nearer of the two.

SANA'S I-AZDI, wearing a number "VIII" or "NoIII" on the nose, at Malta, possibly Kalafrana. The Duke of Toledo (Alphonse XIII) deplanes there on 27.4.32 after flying from Rome, accompanied by Lady Louis Mountbatten and the Duke of Miranda.

A picturesque scene not without its drama. I-AZDN shown at Linaria, Isle of Skyros, Greece, after a forced landing and severe battering by a gale. Damage to the fuselage by the letter Z, and also to the wing tips, may be seen.

German aircraft types obtained by the FACh in the twenties and thirties included the Dornier Wal.
C/ns 33 to 36 formed the first batch of Wals for Chile with 360 hp RR Eagle IX engines. Standard fitments were the "park bench" control assisters mounted above the ailerons and elevators. The small aerofoil on the side of the fuselage was intended to keep spray from the sponson off the rear propeller during take-off, but it was not adopted as standard. No c/n - serial tie-up is known to identify No. 14 shown here.

I-AZDC, number 4 of Aeroespresso, made an emergency landing at Kavalla in north-east Greece, early in 1927. The passengers are seen here being taken off. Note the original square cabin windows of this Wal.

This front view also appears to be I-AZDA, the fleet number "6" (or possibly "5") is visible on the nose as the Wal lies at anchor at Old Phaleron, Athens c.1929.

The caption says that this is I-AZDA as it burnt and sank at Mytilene (Lesvos) during refuelling 30.6.30 but other records claim that to have been the fate of I-AZDH c/n 65.
