The photo of Mew Gull G-AEXF comes to us from R.Barreau via Founder-Member Serge Blandin's collection and Charles Cain. Although we know well the history of the aircraft the photo is said to have been taken at Lyon-Bron in 1948 and to show the prewar colour scheme - with a few taped additions. In that case, why does the somewhat un-Gallic inscription (apparently "Electrical Shop" ?) appear on the hangar wall? We may hypothesise that the tape was applied to facilitate the return flight to the UK in 1950 and that the photo was taken here, but can anyone provide positive evidence of date and location to confirm either suggestion?
The inscription on the wall in last issue's photo was "Electric shop", applied in hangar No.6 at Lyon-Bron and visible there for many years post-war.

  • The RO-1, showing the untapered square-tipped wing, 3-cyl Anzani engine and small size relative to the young man standing in front.
Jack Meaden's photo on p.94/86 shows the 1936 RO-2 with 80 hp Siemens 5-cyl radial but he has now uncovered a photo of the RO-1 which was designed in 1930 and, although very similar in layout, was a much smaller aircraft. Powered by a 35 hp Anzani 3-cyl radial it had a wing span of 6.12 m/20 ft; weights, empty 360 kg/794 lb, loaded 550 kg/ 1804 lb; and max speed of 125 kmh/ 78 mph.
