Ron Durand has commented on the confusion surrounding L1082 mentioned on page 90 of the Autumn issue. It appears in Battle of Britain as 'shot down over IOW; PO A Mamedoff unhurt'.
However, in 1990, the RAF Museum had a display for the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Britain which contained the log sheets of the engineering section of No.609 Squadron. The entry for L1082 reads:
24.8.40 L1082 PO Namedoff (sic) Tail unit and fuselage damaged by E/A
Which raises the question as to which Spit crashlanded at Tapnell Farm on that day. N3239 of 234 Squadron at Little Budbridge Farm was piloted by a PO J Zurakowski, of which much more would be heard in the post-war years as a Gloster test pilot. Tapnell Farm was also the site of a Bf 109 crash on 18th August.
Then a photo came from Chris Goss. It shows Mamedoff with his damaged Spitfire after force-landing at Middle Wallop. Note the camouflage net in place.

  • Argentina appears to have had six Fairey IIIMs, c/n F1222 - F1127, fitted with 450 hp Lorraine Edl2 in-line engines with cowlings over the cylinder heads. They were numbered AP-1 to AP-6, later R-50 to R-55. These were later replaced by 550 hp Panther VIs as fitted to the Seal. They were operated from Lake Nahuel Huapi, up in the Andes. This would seem an odd place to put seaplanes but there must have been a reason.
One Seal was also delivered, F2111. R-54 in the photo has a Seal-type rudder. Did all the re-engined IIIMs get new rudders to cope with the extra power? We do not have a serial for F2111 so is R-54 an original IIIM or a replacement Seal using the same number?

The two Darts shown on page 94 of the Autumn issue were not alone. John Havers has sent in another photo showing four Darts, obviously in the same field. Four forced landings in the same spot seems unlikely so it would appear that the Darts have been taken out of service and dumped. Fleet numbers 70, 71 and 74 appear and the farthest right is presumably No.75 (N9723) as illustrated in the last issue.
