This Messerschmitt Me 262-1a was fitted with a 50mm Rheinmetall BK 5 cannon which stretched about seven feet ahead of the nose. It was not a ground-attack aircraft but was intended as a way of attacking day bomber formations. It produced a large amount of smoke so that it only fired one shot at a time. The nosewheel had to be modified to swivel on retraction to fit in the available space under the cannon.

Регистрационный номер: XH707 Joe Warne has sent in this photograph of one of his 60 Squadron Javelins taken this summer at an air museum near Rimini. XH707 was SOC on 12 December 1967. The movement record shows an accident on 8 November 1967 but there is no accident report and this is thought to be a clerical error for a wear-and-tear categorisation that was not followed up by a refurbishment as the Javelin was going out of service. Having vanished from Singapore, how did it finish up in Italy in 1999? No.60's badge is on the fin with the original letter P.

Among the countries in South America that bought (or sometimes bartered for) Italian aircraft prior to World War Two, was Paraguay which acquired a small number of Breda 65 light bombers.

A Curtiss SC-1 perched on the port catapult of the light cruiser USS Topeka which was commissioned in December 1944. She carried four aircraft but because the design was top-heavy, one of the catapults on this class was often removed, as well as other pieces of superstructure. VO-15C was Topeka's air unit.

Our bafflement at the LeO 257 in the last issue has been explained by Lucien Morareau. It was because it was a Farman F 65 TOR! We were fixated on the nose and failed to notice the small underwing floats faired in at the wingtips. This is a Liore-et-Olivier H257bis taxying out from St.Mandrier seaplane base at Toulon in 1937. We should add that the type's bombing attacks were carried out at night.

Curtiss F9C-2 Sparrowhawk 9058 was one of the Lighter-then-Air unit which was based on the dirigible Macon. The hook over the top wing was used to latch on to the trapeze suspended below the hull. Once firmly in place, it could be hoisted into the airship's hangar. Both Macon and her sister ship Akron were lost in storms. Indiana Jones was not the only person to drop off an airship!
