The photograph from the file give a good idea of the lay-out of Passat's ornithopter. The engine was mounted under the fuselage and the cranks to move the wings were moved by shafts from either side of the engine. There appears to be no directional control surfaces.
Presumably, it is M Passat in the photograph while the pilot in diminutive so is probably his son. The flying helmet seems to be a peaked school cap, complete with school badge.

In one photograph, M Passat had helpfully indicated in which direction the aircraft was intended to proceed.
