Het Vliegveld 22.8.32: Frances Harrell Marsalis and Louise Thaden set the new world women's endurance record of 196 hr 5 min 8 sec between 1400 hrs on 14.8.32 and 1805 hrs on 22.8.32 from Curtiss Field, Long Island, NY, in the process flying some 17,000 miles! They used Curtiss Thrush J NR9142 c/n G-3 (300 hp Wright J-6-7 radial) and made 77 refuelling contacts with their 'tanker" Curtiss C-1 Robin NR82H c/n 434. The flight was sponsored by the I J Fox Fur Company whose advertising was painted on the aircraft. An earlier attempt commencing 12.8.32 had to be abandoned after 18 hours when the refuelling hose caught in the Thrush's aileron and tore off the left wingtip. Marsalis and Helen Richey broke this record in December 1933 with 237 hr 42 min in another Curtiss Thrush J, NR7568 "Outdoor Girl" c/n G-1 (see photo). -
