Регистрационный номер: VH-UNA [2] Avro Ten VH-UNA (3 AS Lynx 7-cyl radials rated at 215 hp) over Melbourne before leaving with the Christmas mail. On the side is the partly-obscured inscription: 'Southern Sun' The First Australian Air Mail & Passenger Service. Australia-England. England-Australia. (Operated?) by Australian National Airways Ltd.
Het Vliegveld 26.11.31: The English Christmas postal aircraft "Southern Sun", a 3-engined Avro Ten, that departed from Hobart, Tasmania to Melbourne on 19 November and left Port Darwin on 23 November with 1500 lbs post for England, crashes at Alor Star. The three occupants are only slightly hurt.
Het Vliegveld 26.11.31: "Southern Sun" was Avro Ten VH-UNA c/n 388 of Australian National Airways flown by G Urquart "Scotty" Allen with crew of L M Callaghan and R Boulton. Also on board this special Christmas Air Mail flight was the Australian Controller of Civil Aviation Lt Col H C Brinsmead. It left Hobart on 19.11.31 (though some sources say 15th), collecting mail shipped from New Zealand at Sydney, and passed through Port Darwin on 23rd. On 26.11.31 it was attempting to take-off from the boggy Alor Star (alternative spelling Alor Setar) airfield on the west coast of northern Malaya when the centre engine failed. The occupants were uninjured but the Ten was badly damaged and consequently written off. Lt Col Brinsmead transferred to a KLM flight and was then injured in a crash at Bangkok.
The mail was more successful - Avro Ten VH-UMG c/n 230 "Southern Star" flown by Charles Kingsford Smith left Sydney on 30.11.31, collecting the mail on 5.12.31 and reaching Croydon 16.12.31 (this compares well with modern Christmas posting dates!). However, the return journey, scheduled for 18.12.32 departure, had to be postponed when "Southern Star" crashed in Kent on the 17th. After repair at Hamble it left on 8.1.33 and reached Darwin on 19.1.33.Самолёты на фотографии: Avro Ten / Type 618 - Великобритания - 1928

The Morane Saulnier MS.275 fighter prototype in which Maryse Hilsz broke the female altitude record on 19.8.32 was the only example built as there were no buyers in spite of the publicity from the record.
Het Vliegveld 19.8.32: French aviatrix Maryse Hilsz brings the female altitude record to 9791 meters at Villacoublay with a 450 hp Morane-Saulnier. The former record was held by Ruth Nicholls, America, with 8761 meters, in March 1931.
Het Vliegveld 19.8.32: The Morane Saulnier aircraft in which Maryse Hilsz broke the women's altitude record by reaching 9,791 m (32,123 ft) was the prototype and only MS.275 parasol wing single seat fighter. It was powered by a Gnome-Rhone 7-cyl KRSe Mistral supercharged radial engine. It had a compression ratio of 6.1/1 (instead of the 5.5/1 of other versions of the engine), was rated at 600 hp for take-off and gave 610 hp at 2450 rpm at 4,000 m (13,123 ft).Самолёты на фотографии: Morane-Saulnier MS.225 - 227 / MS.275 - Франция - 1932

Регистрационный номер: F-AIZR Farman 190 F-AIZR which was not the aircraft used by the Comte de Sibour for his Paris-Peking flight which is documented under 1.9.31 below. The aircraft shown in our photo on p.98/49 was in fact Farman 291 F-ALER which had rectangular cabin windows and a 300 hp Gnome-Rhone 7Kb engine, while the 190 above can be seen to have round windows and was fitted with a 230 hp Gnome-Rhone 5Ba.

Регистрационный номер: F-ALMF Lorraine-Hanriot LH-42 seen probably at roll-out as its registration F-ALMF had not yet been applied. After breaking the 500 km world record in its class on 31.8.32 the pilot Marcel Haegelen had to bale out due to fog and the aircraft was destroyed. A later version, the LH-131-2 was developed with a retractable undercarriage.
Het Vliegveld 31.8.32: French pilot Marcel Haegelen establishes with his Hanriot 41 monoplane with Lorraine engine new world records over 500 km at 500 kg weight, but because of fog formation he is unable to land before he runs out of fuel. He saves himself by parachute - the aircraft is destroyed.
Het Vliegveld 31.8.32: Marcel Haegelen was SGA Chief Pilot and for the record attempt was using F-ALMF, Lorraine-Hanriot LH-42 c/n 1, formerly an LH-41 and fitted with a 300 hp Lorraine 9Nb Algol 9-cyl radial engine. After establishing a record of 285 km/hr (177 mph) over 500 km with a 500 kg payload, Haegelen had to bale out near Etampes as fog prevented him from landing. It is said that the record was not recognised because of the accident, but later versions of the aircraft fitted with the 450 hp Gnome-Rhone Mistral did break records.Самолёты на фотографии: Hanriot LH.41 / LH.130 / LH.131 - Франция - 1930

The third Curtiss-Wright CW-3 Duck c/n 1503, regn 12325, still wearing the original name Teal on nose and engine cowling. This one had a Lambert engine but 12324, which crashed on 6.1.32 killing Dale "Red" Jackson, was Warner-powered. Walter Beech is standing alongside the cockpit of the amphibian.

Регистрационный номер: NR7568 Curtiss Thrush NR7568 c/n G-1 "Outdoor Girl" was used by Frances Harrell Marsalis and Helen Richey as receiver aircraft in an endurance record in 12.33. Note the protective plates fitted at the inboard ends of the ailerons to prevent fouling by the hose or its attachments and which ended an earlier attempt.
Het Vliegveld 22.8.32: American women-pilots Mrs Frances Marsalis and Louise Thaden, who have taken to the air on 14th August, land after 196 hours continuous flying, beating the female endurance record of 122 hours 50 minutes set by Mrs Trout and Cooper. The absolute endurance record is since July 1931 held by the Hunter brothers.
Het Vliegveld 22.8.32: Frances Harrell Marsalis and Louise Thaden set the new world women's endurance record of 196 hr 5 min 8 sec between 1400 hrs on 14.8.32 and 1805 hrs on 22.8.32 from Curtiss Field, Long Island, NY, in the process flying some 17,000 miles! They used Curtiss Thrush J NR9142 c/n G-3 (300 hp Wright J-6-7 radial) and made 77 refuelling contacts with their 'tanker" Curtiss C-1 Robin NR82H c/n 434. The flight was sponsored by the I J Fox Fur Company whose advertising was painted on the aircraft. An earlier attempt commencing 12.8.32 had to be abandoned after 18 hours when the refuelling hose caught in the Thrush's aileron and tore off the left wingtip. Marsalis and Helen Richey broke this record in December 1933 with 237 hr 42 min in another Curtiss Thrush J, NR7568 "Outdoor Girl" c/n G-1 (see photo).Самолёты на фотографии: Curtiss Thrush - США - 1929

Регистрационный номер: NR9142 Frances Harrell Marsalis (previously Frances Harrell) and Louise Thaden photographed together in the cockpit of Thrush NR9142 at the time of their endurance record 8.32. Louise Thaden was famous as a record-breaking and racing pilot, often in the Beech 17. In 1936, with Blanche Noyes, she won the Transcontinental Speed Dash and set a new speed record. Earlier, on 7.12.28 in Travel Air 3000 registered 5426, she set the first official women's altitude record at 20,260 ft and in 1929 won the first women's Air Derby in Travel Air D-4000 R671H.
