The Nordenfeld-engined Short No. I on its starting rail prior to an attempted flight. In this form the aircraft never got further than a few inches from the end of the rail. When powered by a 50-h.p. Green it flew in the Isle of Sheppey.

Construction of the Short Biplane No.1 began before the company built its first Wright Flyer under licence. Its layout was broadly based on the Wright brothers’ design.
Shorts in the beginning: Their first machine, a biplane, had a front elevator and wing-tip rudders. It never actually left the ground.
