R.Beamont - Tempest summer
Пара Tempest Mk V, имеющие "полосы вторжения" (для участников высадки в Нормандии), уходят на боевое задание в Северную Францию. Самолет на малых и средних высотах превосходил Bf 109G и Fw 190A.
Tempests of No 3 Sqn, wearing full Invasion stripes, taking off on patrol from Newchurch in June 1944. Spitfire Vs of 56 Sqn are visible in the background.
Hawker Tempest V JN740, from the same 100-aircraft production batch as the author's machine JN751, shows off the fighter's purposeful lines. JN740 served with 80 Sqn RAF and also undertook rocket-projectile trials at the A&AEE.
The first production Tempest V, JN729, made its first flight on June 21, 1943, in the hands of the late Bill Humble, soon to be Hawker's chief test pilot. Note the trials markings (not Invasion stripes) under the wings.
The author’s Tempest V, JN751 RB, at Castle Camps in March 1944 during (Newchurch, April 1944 ???) the formation of 150 Wing. Note the good view of the gunsight directly reflected into the windscreen - the "Beamont" modification!
Streaked and grimy, Tempest V prototype HM595 passes overhead in early 1943.
