The first of two Fairchild YA-10As made its initial flight at Edwards AFB, California, on 10 May 1972. During the 43-min flight, the Fairchild Republic Division test pilot, Howard Nelson, checked a number of the YA-10A's system and performed a variety of banks and rolls.

A provisional general arrangement drawing of the Ilyushin Il-86. This drawing is based on the model recently displayed in Moscow and shows that the Il-86 is of the same configuration as the Il-62, but has little in common with the smaller transport.
