  • Two views of the pretty little Howard DGA-4 “Mike”, R55Y, with Harold Neumann in charge. Built by Ben Howard in 1932, the 20ft 1in-span DGA-4 had a maximum speed of 207 m.p.h. Here it is painted white with black letters.

  • Two days after baling out of a Northrop in the Bendix Race, Joe Jacobson hit a rough patch of ground while landing the DGA-4 and overturned. The crash was spectacular and the pilot was lucky to escape with just a few bruises.

  • Rudy Kling lends scale to the Keith Rider R-1 Suzy. This blue and cream racer had a wing span of 21ft 4in and a maximum speed of 238 m.p.h. It was of mixed construction, with an aluminium monocoque fuselage and wooden ply-covered wings and tailplane.

  • Dave Elmendorf running up his cream, largely untested Rider R-5, R264Y. The racer's performance proved to be disappointing, owing mainly to the owner/pilot's inexperience. R264Y is currently displayed at the EAA's museum at Oshkosh. The 20ft span racer had a top speed of 225 m.p.h. and, for the 1936 Nationals, was powered by a 250 h.p. Menasco engine.

  • While trying to avoid a collision with Joe Jacobson’s overturned Howard DGA-4 Kling hit a car by Pylon Three and crashed. Amazingly he emerged from the wreckage with just a scratched head, and joined Jacobson in the ambulance for the ride to the medical station.

  • Two views of the 16ft span Folkerts SK-2 Toots, R283Y, piloted by Harold Neumann. Today Neumann is a retired TWA captain and still thrills Reno race crowds with his pylon turns. Built for the 1936 Nationals by Clayton Folkerts, the SK-2 had a welded steel fuselage and ply-covered wooden wings. Colour scheme was brown wings and yellow fuselage, with brown lettering on the fuselage and yellow numbers on the wings. The racer's top speed was 245 m.p.h.

  • Eddie Allenbaugh, facing the camera, and his crew put the finishing touches to the Allenbaugh Model B, R41Y. The over-souped Argus engine blew a piston and the racer failed to make the starting line.
