Vickers Valetta C.1 VX483 of the Far East transport wing snapped in a paddy field near Saigon, Vietnam on February 17, 1956. An engine ran away during take-off and the pilot promptly belly-landed the aircraft. VX483 was part of a batch of 52 Valettas delivered to the RAF between December 1949 and August 1950. This medium-range transport was powered by two 1,975 h.p. Bristol Hercules 230 radial engines and had the capacity to carry 34 troops, 20 paratroops or freight. The type entered RAF service in 1948 and was retired in June 1969, being succeeded by the Hawker Siddeley Andover.
